- Laser printers have a lower cost per copy than inkjet printers, if you plan to print enough copies to recover the cost of the printer. That number is a function of how much you would pay for each. Typically, a laser printer is cheaper per copy if you plan to print more than 3,000 pages in the lifetime of your printer.
- Ask friends about their printers and/or come to a Q&A session.
- The very inexpensive printers are inkjets - the vendors make their money on ink, not on the machines. Some ink is subject to smearing when moist. Longevity of ink varies widely, from 5 years to 50 years, depending on storage conditions.
- The more expensive printers are laser printers, which use dry toner instead of ink. Toner barely smears when moist, and typically last far more years than ink.
